The entire Paleolithic period (5 lakh B.C – 10 thousand BC) falls under the Ice Age, so human relics are mainly found in the peninsula / southern India in the Palaeolithic period because there is more quantity of stones and the atmosphere is also suitable for living.

During this period, humans were hunting for food and hunting animals for their livelihood.

The human of the Paleolithic period used to live in the Kandras of the mountain. Such mountain shelters have been found.

In Paleolithic times, human tools and weapons were Axe, Stones, Takshni, Khurchni, Piercings, which were not sophisticated and sharp.

Animals from which the human was familiar in the Palaeolithic period were – Monkey, Deer, Goat, Buffalo, Cow-Bull, Nilgai, Pig, Reindeer, Rhinoceros, Elephants, etc. The remains of which, found from the artifacts of a mountain shelter.

  • The main sites of the Palaeolithic period found from the coastal areas of Vyas and Sirsa rivers.
  • Pahalgam, Adial, Balwal, Chauntara, etc. were the main settlements of this area.
  • The Palaeolithic archaeological settlements have been found in the valleys of Looni river, Gambhira river, Chambal river from the Deedvana area of the Thar-Desert of Rajasthan.
  • The remains of settlements of Palaeolithic period have been found along the banks of Sabarmati, Mahi, Bhaddar rivers in the Gujarat region.
  • The remains of settlements of Palaeolithic period have been found from the area of Narmada river and the mountain range of Vindhya, in which Bheembetka (M. P.) is famous.
  • Many sites of Palaeolithic period (Navasa, Koregaon, Shikarpur) are located from Vindhya to the south (Tapti, Godavari, Bhima, Krishna rivers).
  • Remains of many settlements of Palaeolithic have been found on the banks of the auxiliary rivers of Krishna in the far south, in which Bagalkot, Paniyar, Guddiyam heads.
  • The archaeological remains have been found on the banks of Damodar and Swaran Rekha rivers in Bengal, on the banks of river Rasee (Singhbhum) in Bihar.
