Bhumara Temple

A stone sanctum was found from a place called Bhumara in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. GangaYamuna figures are built at its entrance. Its door frame is also decorated with Alangarans. The roof of the temple is flat. A single Shiva-linga is installed inside the sanctum. In front of it there is a pillared and pradakshina-path around it.

Following are the characteristics of Shiva temple-

  • The Sanctum of this temple now exists.
  • The platform around the sanctum is a relic of the pradakshina-path.
  • Almost all the characteristics of the gupta temples are there.
  • The idols of Ganga and Yamuna are engraved to the right-left of the gate pillar.
  • The idol of Ekamukhi shivling is installed in temple.
  • The entrance to the sanctum and the pavilion are more ornate than the early Gupta temples.

Apart from Shiva temple, Vishnu temple has been received from Bhumara. In 1988 K.D Vajpayee discovered a Vishnu temple and idol.The ornate entrance to the sanctum is found here. Purnaghat, Patravali, Nagarpramukh, Vyaghrammukh etc. embellishments are found on the door-pillars and head. VarahAvataar, Navagraha etc are also inscribed on the door. The statue of Vishnu is found from near the temple. Apart from this, the remains of secret-temple temples are also found from places called Khoh, Unchehra, Nagaud in Satna and Madhi in Jabalpur.
