Battle of Harshvardhan and Balbhi

Balbhi states was located in Modern Gujarat. The ruler there was Dhruvasen II. Harsh attacked on him. Dhruvasen was defeat and he escaped and took refuge in the Court of Dadd II, the Gurjar ruler of bhanaunch. The King of Gurjar returned his kingdom from harsh.

Harsh Beginning life.

The First known date Dadd is 627 AD. From which this inference can be made, that this war must have occurred 629-30 AD. Dadd reigned until 640 CE, On the basis of which we can infer, that this war must have occurred between 630 and 640 AD.

Dadd was a simple ruler, who could not fight on a powerful ruler like Harsh alone, therefore, he must have fought this war with the help of Chalukya king Pulakeshin II. Pulakeshin’s Ehole inscription suggests that Dad was his feudal lord.

The incident which contributed to Harsh’s war with Dadd and Pulakeshan II’s contribution to help Dadd in this war became the cause of conflict between Harsh and Pulakeshin II.

Harsh married his daughter to Balbhi to bring the king to his side. Now the king of balbhi became a relative of Harsh.

Problem of Narmada valley

Harsh had a problem to secure the Narmada river valley. To the south of the Narmada was the powerful kingdom of the Chalukyas, Those who could get the opportunity to invade North India. Harsh was aware of this crisis. Therefore, after winning the King of Balabhi, he gave the kingdom of Balabhi back to him and at the same time, Harsh gave Malwa and his subordinate kingdom to Balbhi king.

Harsh also married his daughter to the King of Balabhi to deepen the relationship with Balbhi. Harsh had secured the western frontier of his empire from enemies With this understanding.

Balbhi King had become a major obstacle in the path of expansion of the Chalukyas. This was Harsh’s diplomatic achievement, Which can be compared with the Vakataka policy of Chandragupta II.
