Dashaavtar Temple of Devgarh

This temple is taken from a place called Devgarh in Lalitpur (ancient jhansi) district of Uttar Pradesh. Among all the temples of Gupta Period, the Dashaavtar temple of Devgarh is the most beautiful, In which all the characteristics of Gupta temples are acquired. It’s upper part has been destroyed.

The temple is built on a high and wide platform.

The entrance to the sanctum of the temple is attractive and artistic. It is decorated with the idols of gatekeepers river-gods etc. Beautiful views of Lord Vishnu, Naranaarayana, Gajendramoksha etc are engraved on the rest of the temple on the walls of the temples. Many beautiful scenes of Ramayana and Mahabharata are also mentioned in it.

On top of the sanctum is found a pyramidal high triple peak. Chaityakar kirtimukh (Gawaksha) in its four directions and in the middle above it was formed a huge aamalak of Kharbujiya shape. This type of prasad with more than one floor was called polyamory.

The Top floor was called the foreground on which the stone aamalak and a kalash were installed. Thus, where the roofs of other temples are flat, this is the first example of Shikhar temple. It can be considered as a specimen of excellent architecture of the Gupta period.

Many of its elements have been ingested in later temples. In Percy Brown’s words, the entire building was undoubtedly of extraordinary excellence in terms of the precise planning of its organs, which while being practically useful, were full of the highest artistic sense.

Similar to the Gupta temple of Devgarh, high-level workmanship with the maturity and sophistication of fencing capacity can display very few monuments.
