The 23rd Tirthankar of Jainism, Lord Parashavanath gave four Mahavrat and the 24th Tirthankar Mahavir Swami gave the fifth Mahavrat Brahmacharya Jodha. And the five Mahavrutas developed in Jainism.

The person taking the initiation prognostic says that “O Arihant, I shall neither use violence, untruth, theft, indulgence and intimacy from the verb – I will do it myself nor will I do any harm. O Lord, I promise to follow the life of these five great men.”

five Mahavrat is the following:

  1. Nonviolence –Jain sadhus – Sadhvi do not commit violence of any organism. Live the life with the promise of not even drinking small creatures.
  2.  Truth –Jain sadhus and Sadhvi never lie, no matter how much difficulty comes to their life.
  3. Renunciation – Jain sadhu does not have money with him. They do not carry any kind of movable or immovable property and do not collect anything.
  4. Asteya –Jain can not steal in religion and if someone steals, then it is called a sinner.
  5. Brahmacharya-Jain ascetics have to follow celibacy completely. Their rules are filled with vigilance. Whether for any kind of age for a Sadhus, whether it is of any age or age, and for the Sadhvi, it is prohibited for any age to be discriminated against.
