Maukhari dynasty of Kannauj

It is said about the Maukharis origin, that the Maukharis were among the Ganga Valley republics of pre-Gupta age. There were many Maukharis in ancient India who ruled in different parts. One of his branches ruled in southern Bihar and the other in the Ganges-Yamuna Doab (capital Kannauj).

After the fall of the Kushans, both these branches declared their independence. But the imperialist policy of the Guptas again pushed them into balance. The absence of references to the mukharis in the Puranas and early Gupta writings is indicative that they had no political significance.

Kaningham has received a seal from Gaya, On which Maukhlinam is inscribed in the Mauryan Brahmi script. This not only proves their antiquity, but it is also informed, that the same courtesans from the Lichchhavi castes also had their own autonomous republic in the beginning. Later this system was changed and in the later Guptas we find them organized as monarchies.

The use of oral and vocal words is found in oral writings and literary texts.
