Yashodharman (King of Malwa)

Yashodharman was a power that deeply shocked the power of the Guptas like the Huns, Which shone like a meteor in the political sky of central India in 530 AD.

Not much information is known about the Genesis and former life of this mighty King of Malwa. In an article obtained from a place called Rishtalpur near Mandsaur, Yashodharman’s father’s name is found Prakashdharman. He is called the Adhiraj, The one who defeated Toramaan. His date is 515 AD.

We get the details of Yashodharman’s military achievements from two records of Mandsaur. The date of one of these is Malav Samvat 589 i.e. 532 AD, And it presents a brief account of his victories- He assumed the title of Rajadhiraj Parmeshwar by defeating many powerful kings of the East and many kings of the North.

In the middle of Vindhya and Pariyatra and the land extending to the Arabian Sea, Abhayadatta ruled as his vayasaray. According to this, he also conquered the territories which could not be ruled even by the Gupta kings And where the command of the Huns could not enter.

He conquered territories ranging from the Lohitya (Brahmaputra River) in the east to the sea in the west, and from the Himalayas in the north to Mahendraparvat in the south. In this inscription, the defeat of Hunnaresh Mihirkul is also described in a poetic manner.

Mandsaur Commendation depicts Yashodharman as the Chakravarti ruler of North India. Mihirkul’s defeat was one of Yashodharman’s achievements.

The rise and fall of Yashodharman took place between 528 and 543 AD. In the Mandsaur Commendation, it is called Janendra. His full name was Janendra Yashodharman and he belonged to the Aulikar dynasty.
