Ancient IndiaVakataka Dynasty

History of Rudrasen First

The First ruler of the principal branch of the Vakataka dynasty was the grandson of Parversen First and son of Gutamiputra was Rudrasen first (335–360 AD). He Was born to the daughter of Bhaavnag, Bhaarshiv naag the ruler of Padmavati(Gwalior). With the help of his maternal grandfather Bhaavnaag, He conquered his two opposing Uncles. But he could not defeat Sarvesen. He was a weak ruler, during which time the power and prestige of the vaakaataakaas was damaged. Some Scholars identify Rudrasen with Rudradeva of Prayaag Prasashti whom Samundragupt had a liberated in the battle of Aryavarta.

There is no basis for believing this,as Rudradeva was the ruler of North india while Rudrasen was the king of the south. Rudradeva was an exclusive devotee of Lord Shiva. It is possible that Shaiv has been caused by the influence of his maternal grandfather bhaavnaag. In the vakataka records it is described as a worshiper of Mahabhairva. His name does not get the tittle of former emperor.
