Kadambari composed by Banabhatta. It is the best novel in Sanskrit literature. Banabhatta was the court scholar of Harsh, the ruler of the Vardhan dynasty. From the study of Kadambari, we get the knowledge of the social and religious life of the time.

Kadambari is entitled to be called the world’s first novel. Its story is probably taken from the story of Sumanas, the king of the great story composed by Gunadhya. This book could not be completed in the lifetime of Banabhatta. After Babhatta’s death, his son Bhushanbhatta (or Pulindabhatta) completed it and named the part written by Banabhatta as ‘Purvabhag‘ and the part written by Bhushanbhatt named ‘Uttarabhaag‘.
