Rigveda Samhita
Rigveda is the most ancient Veda.
This Veda is the earliest source of Sanatan Dharma and it consists of 10 divisions, 1028 Sukta, 3 branches.
Vedas mantras are called Sukta. Gayatri Mantra has been described in Rig Veda. The Rig Veda contains the mantras of praise of the Gods.
3 branches of Rig Veda-
- Sakal Branch- 1017 Mantra (currently available)
- Vashakal branch- There are 57 chants in the Vashakal branch.
- Valkhilya branch- There are 11 mantras in the branch.
There are 10 divisions in Rig Veda, of which 2 to 7th division is the oldest and also called Gautrah Mandal because these were composed by Rishis of Gautrah vishesh.
Priest belonging to the Rig Veda was called -Hota/Hotr. (The priest who recited after recreating the Rig’s code.)
Subdivision of Rigveda – is Ayurveda.
Brahmin texts of Rigveda – Atreya Brahmin, Kaushitaki Brahmin.
Upnishad of Rigveda – Aitareya Upanishad, Kaushitaki Upanishad;
Division of Rigveda – Composer Second Division – Gratsamat Bhargav Third Division – Vishvamitra (In this 3 mantras are composed by 3 kings- -Ajmeedh, Purmeedh, Trasdasyu) Fourth Division – Vamdev Fifth Division – Atari Sixth Division – Bharadwaj Seventh Division – Vashishth Eighth Division – Kanadv Angiras |
- The 7th Division of Rigveda is related to education.
- The 9th division is dedicated to Som (God of the vegetation), hence this division is called Som Mandal.
- The 1st and the 10th Division are the newest divisions.
- The Chaturvarna (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra) is mentioned for the first time in the male sukta of 10th Division.
- The marriage sukta of the 10th division mentions the marriage system of the Vaidik period.
- There is the talk of 42 Rivers in river sukta of the 10th division, whereas the name of only 19 Rivers has been given.
