Harshvardhan

The era of political decentralization started in North India after the disintegration of the Gupta Empire. It came to an end with the ascension of Harshvardhan. The most mighty emperor (Harshvardhan) of the Vardhan dynasty or Pushyabhuti dynasty, with his titles, took control over the vast territory of North India.

Harshvardhan was an expansionist and talented ruler like Ashoka and Samudragupt, the principal emperors of ancient India. The one who hoisted his fame in history.

Harshvardhan’s early life

Harshvardhan was born in 591 AD. Harshvardhan was the son of Prabhakarvardhan. His mother’s name was Yashomati. Harsh’s court poet Banabhatta describes the events of Harsh’s childhood in the fourth exile of his treatise Harshcharit.

According to Baan, there was a rise of happiness in Yashomati’s womb and heart simultaneously, like, of a chakrapani in the womb of the goddess. Harsh was born on Dwadashi, the Krishna Paksha of Jyeshtha month. According to Rajyotishi Tarak, such auspicious yoga happens on the occasion of the birth of the Chakravarti emperor.

Harsh’s childhood was spent with his maternal brother Bhandi and two sons of Malavaraj Mahasengupt Kumaragupt and Madhavagupt. He was educated according to the princes. He became adept at running a variety of weapons.

The second work of Banabhatta is Kadambari, In which students of that time were taught grammar, justice, Ramayana, Mahabharata, politics, Puran etc. Which was also given to Harsh.

After the death of Rajyavardhan, Harsh was seated on the throne of Thaneshwar in 606 AD. At that time, the commander of Harsh was Sinhanad.

When Harsh ascended, he had many problems, which he had to prevent, The details of which are as follows-

  • Revenge the death of his brother Rajyavardhan by killing Gaun King Shashank.
  • My own sister.
  • To free Rajyashree from the prison of Kannauj.
  • Punish all those kings and feudatories, those who took advantage of time declared their independence.

Thus we can say that Harsh took the reins of Thaneshwar’s rule at an early age and gave a befitting reply to his enemies as well. At the same time, he organized the vast territory of northern India under his empire.
