Vishnu temple of Eran

A temple of Vishnu was built at Gupta Period at a place called Eran in sagar district of Madhya Pradesh, which has collapsed. The temple’s sanctum and two pillars standing in front of it are today residual.

Among the ruins received from Eran, the temple of Lord Vishnu of the Gupta period and the temple of Varaha and Narsingh on both sides are prominent. No such large statue of Varaha exists anywhere in India. The idols are engraved in all the parts of its face, stomach, legs etc. A 47-feet high Garudaflag stands in front of the Vishnu temple. Several inscriptions are found in the form of fractal inscriptions near these relics.

Major records are found from Eran, which are as follows-

  • Records of shak ruler, Shridhar varman
  • Records of Gupta Emperor, Samundragupta
  • Records of Gupta Emperor, Budhgupta
  • Records of Hoon ruler, Toramaan
  • Contemporary inscriptions of Gupta Emperor, Bhanugupta(Gopraaj Sati pillar article)
