Date of Gupta Kings(Lineage)

After the decline of the Shung dynasty, the credit of re-uniting the unity of Sanatan culture goes to the people of Gupta dynasty. The Gupta dynasty was founded around 320 AD by Chandragupta-I and this dynasty remained under rule till 510 AD. Art, Science, religion and literature flourished a lot during this period. But in history Shreegupta and Ghatotkacha are also named, Who are believed to belong to the Gupta dynasty, But the establishment of the Gupta dynasty is attributed Chandragupta-I only.

Following is the chronology of Gupta rulers-

  1. Shreegupta and Ghatotkacha – 275 to 319 AD.
  2. Chandragupta-I – 319 to 350 AD.
  3. Samundragupta – 350 to 375 AD.
  4. Chandragupta-II Vikramaditya – 375 to 415 AD.
  5. Kumargupta-I – 415 to 455 AD.
  6. Skandgupta – 455 to 467 AD.
  7. Purugupta – 467 to 473 AD.
  8. Kumargupta-II – 473 to 477 AD.
  9. Buddhgupta – 477 to 495 AD.
  10. Narsinggupta Baladitya – 495 to 530 AD.
  11. Bhanugupta – 510 AD to ?
  12. Vainyagupta– 507 AD to ?
  13. Kumargupta-III – 530 to 543 AD.
  14. Vishnugupta – 543 to 550 AD.

Important Facts related to Gupta rulers

  • All the Gupta king except Narsinggupta Baladitya were Vedic relgious. Baladitya embraced Buddhism.
  • Initially, his rule was only on Magadha, but later he subjugated the whole of North India. After this the king of Kanjeevaram in the south also surrendered.
  • During the time of Skandgupta, the Hunas invaded Kamboj and Gandhara( North Afghanistan). The Huns finally began to enter in India. Defending the Gupta Empire by combating the Huns was the biggest event of the reign of Skandgupta.
  • Skandgupta and Hunas army fought fiercely and the Gupta army emerged victorious. The huns were never able to move beyond Gandhara, while the people of the Hun and Shakya castes lived in different areas of India at this time.
