During the period of the Chakravarti Guptas, two Maukharikuls resided in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as their feudatories. Three inscriptions of the Maukhari branch of Bihar are derived from the caves of barabar and Nagarjuni hills. In this, the names of three kings of this branch are found – Yajnavarma, Shardulavarma and Anantivarma.

Harivarma
The history of Kannauj’s Maukharis begins from the time of Maharaja Harivarma. He started his rule from 510 AD. The title of Maharaja suggests that Chakravarti accepted subjection to the Gupta dynasty.
His power is praised in harahaalekh. It has been said about him that his fame spread to all the four seas. He was also like a volcano for his enemy. He was the founder of Varnashrama system and was going to remove the sufferings of subjects.
Adityavarma
Adityavarma was the son and successor of Harivarma. Asirgarh’s article finds his mother’s name Bhattarikadevi Jayaswamini. He was married to the princess Harshagupta, a Uttaragupta.
Ishwarvarma
Adityavarma’s son Ishwaravarma became the ruler. In Jaunpur article, praising his power, he has been called like a lion in the kings (Kshitibhujam Singh), The one who defeated the rulers of Dhara (Malwa), Andhra and Ravatak, was married to Guptakanya Upagupta.
Thus we can say that till the third generation the relations with the Maukharis and the Uttaragupta were friendly. The first three rulers assumed the title of Maharaj which clearly signified his feudal status.
