Grahvarma(Maukhari Ruler)

Avantivarma’s son was Grahvarma, who became his successor i.e. the next ruler of Maukhari dynasty. Grahvarma sat on the throne in 600 AD and ruled till 605AD.

Grahvarma authority over the Magadh Empire had ended, he was the only ruler of Kannauj. There is only a book called Harshcharit to get information about Grahvarma.

Gahvarma was married to Rajyashree, daughter of King Prabhakarvardhan of Thaneshwar.

At the time of marriage proposal, Avantivarma, father of Grahvarma died. This marriage was done by GrahVarma himself. Grahavarma was afraid of Gowda in the east. Now we see here that Prabhakarvardhan was also concerned with the increasing power of Devgupta, Due to which he thought it appropriate to marry his daughter with Grahvarma and accepted the proposal of Grahvarma.

Now it happened that through this matrimonial relationship, there was a close bond between the two dynasties Maukhari and Vardhan. The other side, a second treaty was established against these two dynasties between Uttaragupta Vanshi Naresh Devgupta of Malwa and Gaura Vanshi Naresh Shashank of Bengal.

At the time when Prabhakarvardhan died in Thaneshwar, at the same time, Devagupt attacked Kannauj and killed Grahvarma. and imprisoned Rajyashree and put him in the prison house of Kannauj.

Devagupt is not mentioned anywhere in Harshacharit, the evil ruler of Malwa is used for Devagupt.

The name of Devgupt is clearly mentioned in the article of Bansakhenda.

At the time of Grahvarma’s death, the Maukhari kingdom extended from Thaneshwar in the west to Magadh in the east and from the Himalayas in the north to Prayag in the south.

The later history of Grahvarma was related to the vardhan history of Thaneshwar. Rajyashree was only 12 years old at this time. Rajyashree had no child. For this reason both Harsh and Rajyashree used to sit together on the throne of Kannauj.

After the death of Grahvarma, Harsh shifted his capital to Kannauj. The reason for this capital change could be that Harsh wanted to help his sister Rajyashree in administrative tasks. And for this reason Rajyashree continued to rule Kannauj for a lifetime with the help of her brother Harsh.
